Museo Atlántico is an underwater museum located off the coast of Lanzarote, one of the Canary Islands. It is the first underwater sculpture museum in Europe and the Atlantic Ocean.
The museum was created by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor and features a collection of more than 300 life-sized sculptures that were installed on the ocean floor. The sculptures are made from eco-friendly materials and were designed to act as artificial reefs that attract marine life and encourage the growth of coral.
The sculptures at Museo Atlántico are arranged in various installations, each with a different theme and message. Some of the installations include a group of figures walking towards a gateway, a giant human skull, and a collection of figures holding hands in a circle.
The museum can be visited by both snorkelers and scuba divers, and there are several local dive centers that offer tours and equipment rental. The depth of the sculptures ranges from 12 to 15 meters, making it accessible to divers of all experience levels.
Museo Atlántico is not only a unique attraction for visitors to Lanzarote but also serves as an important conservation effort. By providing a habitat for marine life and promoting the growth of coral, the museum contributes to the preservation of the local marine ecosystem.
